State-of-the-Art Biosafety Laboratory Established at Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya Campus

Raipur, October 12, 2026/ Chief Minister Shri Vishnu Deo Sai said that the state-of-the-art Biosafety Level-3 (BSL-3) laboratory established at the Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya campus in Raipur will give a new direction to advanced biosafety research in Chhattisgarh. It will also play an important role in scientific innovation and infectious disease prevention.

The laboratory will promote the identification and scientific study of infectious pathogens, research into vaccine and treatment development, and the development of advanced diagnostic technologies.

Chief Minister Shri Sai said that expanding scientific research, biotechnology, and modern laboratory facilities in Chhattisgarh is an important step toward the state’s overall development, in line with Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s vision of a developed India. He said such an advanced scientific facility is significant for Chhattisgarh, whose economy is based on agriculture and animal husbandry.

The Biosafety Level-3 laboratory was inaugurated on September 28. The Chhattisgarh Biotech Promotion Society established it under the newly constructed Subhash Chandra Bose Biotech Incubation Centre at the Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya campus.

Chief Minister Shri Sai appreciated Dr Girish Chandel, Vice-Chancellor of Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya and Chief Executive Officer of the Chhattisgarh Biotech Promotion Society, for achieving this important milestone. He congratulated them and extended his best wishes.

The Chief Minister said that the BSL-3 laboratory will accelerate the study and surveillance of infectious diseases affecting plants, animals and humans, particularly zoonotic diseases that spread from animals to humans.

The facility could help detect serious infectious diseases early, strengthen preparedness to respond to outbreaks, and improve advanced diagnostic capabilities. He said that the state-of-the-art laboratory will provide a controlled environment that meets high biosafety standards. This will create new opportunities for scientists and researchers to study infectious pathogens and develop vaccines and treatments. It will also improve coordination among agricultural biotechnology, animal health, and infectious disease research in the state.

The Chief Minister said that the laboratory will play an important role in strengthening the One Health approach, which recognises the interconnectedness of human health, animal health and the environment. This will create more opportunities for disease surveillance and the development of scientific solutions in agriculture and animal husbandry.

Shri Sai said Indira Gandhi Krishi Vishwavidyalaya has already made significant contributions to agricultural research, biotechnology, and the development of modern laboratory facilities.

The university’s Phytosanitary Laboratory plays an important role in testing and research involving agricultural samples, soil, water, crop residues, and other materials. Establishing the BSL-3 laboratory will further strengthen the university’s scientific research capabilities.

The Chief Minister said the facility will provide scientists, researchers, laboratory technicians, and other relevant specialists with opportunities for training and research in line with high biosafety standards. It will encourage the development of skilled scientific human resources in the state and promote the adoption of advanced research techniques.
